Can Boxing Help With Stress and ANXIETY?

Mind & Body

What boxing really does for a stressful week, from what we see on the floor in Markham.

If you are carrying a lot right now and wondering whether boxing could actually help, the short answer is yes.

We see it happen almost every day. People walk in with the weight of a hard week on their shoulders and leave lighter, calmer and smiling. This is what we have learned about why boxing is such a good outlet for stress and anxiety, and why so many people who take up boxing in Markham end up telling us the same thing. It became the part of their week they could not do without.

What We Actually See Happen

The change often starts the moment someone walks in. They start skipping, they start hitting the pads, they fall into easy conversation with the people around them, and the hardship of the day begins to fade. You can watch a dim face brighten and a lightness return to someone's step.

There is real science underneath it. When you exercise and do something you love, your body releases endorphins, and so many people are missing exactly that in their daily lives. We create movement and energy here, and the more you move the more that energy builds on itself. As we like to put it, you need to give more of what you want more of. To have more energy, you need to exert more energy.

By the end of class the shoulders drop and the posture softens. People are smiling more, despite the genuinely hard workout we just put them through.

Why Boxing, And Not Just A Run

Plenty of exercise helps with stress, so what makes boxing different? A lot of it comes down to how solo most workouts are. Running is usually a solo thing, and even in a running group you are not really chatting. A gym floor or a yoga studio tends to be silent and solitary too.

A boxing gym is the opposite. You are partnered up, and there is constant communication, interaction and community built into the training. We are communal mammals, and that connection matters far more than we tend to give it credit for.

On top of that you get the focus, the exertion and the rhythm all stacked together. When a coach is calling combinations at you, there is simply no room left to worry about your inbox. Your mind gets a break because the training demands your full attention. You can see what our boxing in Markham actually looks like on our Boxing Lab page.

A Real Story From Our Gym

One of our members came in during a genuinely stressful stretch of life. His partner was expecting their first child, and he was carrying everything that comes with that. The impending birth, the coming change to his whole life, the finances, and the constant worry for the health and mood of his pregnant partner.

After class he felt a huge release and relief. He was smiling by the end, and he said something we think about often. He said he needed to somehow make time for this every single day.

How We Coach The Mental Side

Some of the stress relief happens naturally through a good hard session, and some of it we build in on purpose. Which approach a person needs really depends on the person.

For some, you have to say it out loud to make them self aware. Sometimes that means walking up to someone mid-session and simply telling them they are thinking too much. For others we build it in structurally, like starting class with a few deep breaths to shake off everything they carried in from the outside world.

That is what we mean by Where Mind Meets Might. The mental side is not left to chance. You can read more about our coaches and the thinking behind how we train on our About page.
