Beginner's Guide · 2026 Everything you need to know before your first class
Zenith Martial Arts

If you have been thinking about starting boxing but are not sure where to begin, you are not alone. Plenty of people decide they want to try boxing and then get stuck on the real first question, which is not how to throw a punch but where to train. This guide walks you through how to choose the right gym in Markham, what your first few weeks actually feel like, and how to take your first step with confidence.

How to Choose a Boxing Gym in Markham

Not all gyms are the same, and the number one thing to get right is the coaching. Here is what to look for before you commit anywhere.

01 · Start With the Coaches

The coaches matter more than anything else in the building. Read the reviews and look closely at how people describe them. You want coaches who are attentive, caring and technique focused, who look out for the wellbeing of their students both inside and outside the gym. And remember, just because someone is a big time medalist does not make them a good coach. Not all who can do can teach.

02 · Watch for Red Flags

  • You feel pressured to join or to spend more money.
  • Coaches are degrading toward students, calling names or threatening.
  • Coaches are inattentive, on their phones instead of watching the room.
  • Consistently bad reviews.
  • The vibe when you walk in is "we think we are tough guys" rather than a place to learn.

03 · Take a Trial and Judge for Yourself

The best way to sort the good from the bad is simple. Take a trial class at a few different gyms and assess all of the above in person. You can meet our coaches Pete and Moe on our About page before you ever set foot inside.

"Good coaching is a relationship, not a transaction."

What Your First Weeks Look Like

Consistency matters more than intensity. For a beginner, a good rhythm is around three classes a week. That gives you steady improvement and lets your body build up muscle and conditioning in a healthy, sustainable way rather than all at once.

Physically, expect some soreness, especially in those first few weeks. That is normal and it is a good thing. You want to feel a healthy soreness at the end of a session, the kind that means you are building. Your hands, calves and ankles will all get used to new types of impact, and your body adapts faster than you would think.

Mentally, that first week or month is about finding your footing while you learn the basics. After a few months you will feel far more comfortable. Progress also differs from person to person. Everyone learns at a different pace and in a different way. Some people are naturally stronger, some pick up certain movements faster than others, and all of that is completely fine.

"In the right environment, you should feel comfortable after your very first class. Comfortable to learn and grow without any fear of embarrassing yourself."

Boxing in Markham, and the People Who Train Here

Markham has plenty of martial arts schools that teach some boxing. What it does not have many of is a club that focuses solely on boxing on its own. That focus is exactly what we set out to build at Zenith, and it is a real difference when boxing is the whole point rather than one item on a long menu.

Markham is very much a commuter city, home to a lot of working professionals and families with people who spend their days in the city and come home here. Our members reflect that. They range from kids to adults and they come in for every reason you can imagine, from fitness and stress relief to confidence, discipline and community.

The Benefits That Go Beyond Fitness

Getting fit is the obvious part. What keeps our members coming back is everything underneath it. Boxing builds coordination and mental strength. It is a genuine release for stress, aggression and pent up emotion, and there is a real sense of accomplishment that comes from testing your limits and watching your technique sharpen.

There is also confidence and a sense of self-security. We believe everyone should know some form of self defense. You simply feel calmer and more secure moving through life knowing you have the ability to protect yourself if you ever needed to.

Better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.

The part most beginners do not expect is the team. A boxing club is a team environment, and you get all the benefits of a team sport. You need people who train alongside you, who support and encourage you and push you to the next level. At Zenith we are a team, and we push that mentality across everyone from our competitors to our recreational students. We all help each other improve and build each other up. If you are still deciding whether you are ready, our post on whether adults can start boxing with no experience is a good next read.

Your First Step

If you have read this far, you are closer than you think. The simplest first step is to come in and try a class, and there is really nothing you need to do to prepare beforehand. So here is the one thing we want every nervous first-timer to hear right before they walk through our doors.

Breathe. The hardest part is showing up.
